Barclays has announced it is going to close accounts belonging to Expats, no longer resident in the UK, this announcement from Barclays will affect thousands of Expats with accounts with Barclays, leaving them no way of accessing there money.
Barclays Have contacted customers, giving them 6 months’ notice to find an alternative bank, they can, however, open a global account with the bank but they will have to maintain a balance over £100,000 and pay a fee of £40 per month. Customers can keep loans and mortgage accounts, however, they will not be able to lend any more. A spokesperson from Barclays said;
“As a ring fenced bank, our Barclays UK products are designed for customers within the UK. We will no longer be offering personal current or savings accounts to retail customers with addresses registered with us outside of the United Kingdom, subject to limited exceptions. We are contacting impacted customers to give them advance notice of this decision and explain the next steps they need to take.”
