id verification

simple, on-line identity check for account holders

Expost provides virtual accommodation addresses and mailboxes.   We don't create Companies,  set up bank accounts or transact international finance.   This limited role as a Company Service Provider allows us the freedom to interpret HMRC rules on ID Verification,  and the flexibility to do whatever is legally possible to make the process easier for you.

uk residents

any nationality, living in the UK

Passports for foreign nationals living in the UK
photo id

At least one photographic proof of identity for the Account Holder.

This could be your:
i)  Passport photo page*
ii)  Any driving licence photo card
iii)  Other Government issued photo ID card

* If you are a UK citizen,  a passport alone may be enough to meet the required points criteria if accompanied by a 'proof of address' document.

* For foreign nationals;  your passport is required,  and a second photo ID may also be needed to reach the required score,  so if you have two items on the list,  submit both!

and a photo of yourself

In all cases,  a simple 'selfie'  (full face and without a hat)  confirms that the documents being submitted are those of the Account Holder.

proof of address

If required,  documents submitted as proof of residential address should ideally be less than 3 months old and must be in the Account Holder's name.

Examples include:
i)  A utility,  landline or internet bill
ii)  A bank,  building society or credit card statement
iii)  A certificate of insurance
iv)  A pay slip or P45 / P60
v)  Any HMRC notice or benefits letter

image standards

Images,  whether scans or photographs,  should not be cropped in any way.  They must be in colour,  clear and in focus,  with no marks or reflections  (it may help to turn off the flash on your phone!)  that prevent any part of the document from being read.

british expatriates

uk citizens living or working abroad

UK passports
photo id

Again,  at least one photographic proof of identity is required for the named Account Holder.

This could be your:
i)  Passport photo page
ii)  UK driving licence photo card
iii)  European Union travel ID Card
iv)  Other Government issued photo ID card

As a UK citizen,  your passport alone may be enough to meet the points criteria,  but please be prepared to provide a second form of identity if required.

plus a photo of yourself

A simple 'selfie' confirms that the documents being submitted are those of the Account Holder.

image standards

Images,  whether scans or photographs,  should follow these simple rules.

1:  The whole of the document must be shown within the image.  It should not be cropped or cut-off in any way.

2:  The image must be in full colour,  clear and in focus,  with no marks or reflections that prevent any part of the document from being read.  In this regard,  it may help to turn off the flash on your phone.

3:  The 'selfie' of the account holder should be full face and taken without a hat or sunglasses.  And please don't worry about having a bad hair day,  the world will never see it!  :o)

4:  Images must not have been edited or digitally altered in any way.

those of no fixed abode

canal & river boaters or constant travellers

Being 'of no fixed abode' does not mean living in a cardboard box or shop doorway!   At current estimates,  over a million people in the UK live permanently aboard canal boats,  or in static caravans and motorhomes.   Then there is also the growing number of people who travel constantly with their work and have no permanent,  fixed,  postal address.

photo id

At least one photographic proof of identity is required.

This could be your:
i)  Passport photo page
ii)  UK driving licence photo card
iii)  Other Government issued photo ID card

If you are a UK citizen,  photo IDs alone may provide enough points to satisfy the ID criteria.

plus a photo of yourself

A simple 'selfie' confirms that the photo ID submitted belongs to the Account Holder.

proof of address

We well understand that circumstances are different for everyone and especially so when you may have been living on the road,  a caravan site or the cut,  for several years,  which is why we don't insist on proof of address.

If you have been of No Fixed Abode for any length of time,  we may be able to accept documents that relate to your last fixed address in the UK,  even if they are several years old.

If in doubt,  please ask for our help!

foreign nationals overseas

any non-uk citizens, living elsewhere in the world

ID verification for foreign nationals overseas
photo id

Because it is so difficult to check addresses outside of the UK,  we rely much more upon a process of official document validation that compares your submitted photo IDs with government databases from over 70 countries.

As a non-UK citizen, you probably need to submit two photo ID documents to reach the required score.  These can include;

i)  A passport photo page
ii)  A National or State driving licence
iii)  A personal Identity Card
iv)  Any other government issued photo ID

image standards

Images, whether scans or photographs, should follow these simple rules.

1:   The whole of the document must be shown within the image.  It should not be cropped or cut-off in any way.

2:   The image must be clear and in focus, with no redacted areas,  marks or reflections  (again,  it may help to turn off the flash on your phone)  that prevent any part of the document from being read.

3:   The document should be as 'square on' to the camera as possible and not photographed at an angle.

don't worry!

We know that circumstances are different for everyone and there is no such thing as an 'average' customer.

In the event that your submitted ID is insufficient to meet the minimum Verification criteria,  our Compliance team will contact you with advice and a request for further information.

ID processing usually takes less than 2 hours during the working week  (Monday to Friday).   Once verified,  the status of your account will automatically change to  'Active' and the mail forwarding controls will appear in your control panel.   Please note that you must verify your identity within seven days of registration to avoid the account being temporarily suspended.
